Helping with math homework without doing the math

The math sheet slides out of the backpack and your child is already saying, "I don't get it." You look at the page, realize you could finish the whole thing in seven minutes, and feel your dinner plans quietly slipping away. Helping without taking over is harder than it sounds, especially when the method on the paper looks like it was invented by a committee with too many sticky notes.

Why rescuing backfires (even when it's faster)

When your child is stuck, jumping in feels kind. Sometimes it is; if the directions are unclear or the example is missing, a little help spares everyone the Homework Meltdown Theater. But doing the thinking for them teaches a sneaky lesson: when math feels hard, an adult takes over.

That's not the lesson anyone wants. Elementary math is full of moments where the process matters more than the answer. Your child is learning to read a problem, try a strategy, check whether an answer makes sense, and recover when the first try goes sideways.

Rescuing also breeds dependence. Explain every step and your child stops listening to their own brain and starts watching your face for clues. "Is this right?" quietly becomes "Are you happy with me?" A better goal than a perfect paper: a kid who can say "I tried this, got stuck here, and I know what to ask tomorrow." Sit on your hands: what to do instead of explaining

This is the hardest move, sincerely: sit nearby, keep your hands off the pencil, and resist becoming the teacher of the evening.

You can still be useful. Read the directions out loud. Cover the bottom half of the page so it looks less like a wall. Say "show me where it got confusing." Produce a snack, because sometimes the math problem is actually a blood-sugar problem wearing a subtraction costume.

Think coach, not player. Coaches don't run onto the field and take the shot. In practice that means: have your child reread the problem one sentence at a time, circle the numbers, underline the question. Hand over scrap paper, coins, dry pasta, the small plastic animals. Say "make a first try, it doesn't have to be pretty." Then wait longer than feels normal. Ten silent seconds watching a kid stare at 47 minus 19 feels like an hour, but that's the room their brain needs.

One more thing to watch: your own face. Kids read parent tension around math with alarming accuracy, and if numbers made you sweat in school, that anxiety passes down more easily than you'd think. Bored calm is the energy to fake, even while your inner monologue is doing jumping jacks.

Questions that hand the pencil back

Good homework questions don't lead your child by the nose. They help them notice what they already know. Instead of "no, you need to regroup here," try "what do you notice about the ones place?" You're handing the pencil back, again and again.

A few that work across the elementary grades:

  • "What is the problem asking you to find?"
  • "Can you draw it?"
  • "Have you seen one like this before?"
  • "Does your answer make sense? How do you know?"
  • "Where exactly did your brain say nope?"

That last one is a favorite. "I don't get it" is too big to work with. "I got stuck when I had to trade a ten" is a real starting point. For word problems, ask for the story without the numbers first: "So there are kids on a bus, some get off, and we need to know how many are left?" Once the story makes sense, the math usually calms down.

Fact practice is the exception to all this coaching: keep it short and low-drama. A dice game after dinner or a quick round of online math games beats one long grumpy session at the table. If everyone's jaw is clenched, the learning has left the building.

When the method looks nothing like your math

This one ambushes parents. Your child brings home a subtraction problem and, instead of stacking the numbers, starts drawing a number line or breaking 63 into 60 and 3. Your whole body wants to say "why not just do it the normal way?"

Deep breath. Most schools now teach several methods on purpose, because kids need to understand what the numbers mean before the traditional shortcut pays off. The stacked algorithm still gets taught, usually a grade or so after the drawings. The models come first to build the understanding underneath.

The magic sentence is: "Teach me how your teacher showed it." Then listen. Your child may surprise you. Or they may explain it in a way that makes no sense because they're eight and missing one sock. Either way you learn something. The thing to avoid is teaching a competing shortcut mid-confusion. It works tonight; tomorrow your child sits in class holding two half-learned systems. A safe line: "I know another way, and I'll show you after you can do your teacher's way." Math has more than one road. Just don't switch roads while the kid is already lost.

When to stop and write the teacher a note

Reasonable struggle sounds like sighing, erasing, trying again, needing a break. Unreasonable struggle looks like tears, panic, hiding under the table, or 45 minutes on three problems with zero progress. Pushing through at that point doesn't build grit. It builds dread.

So stop. Say it out loud: "We're done for tonight. I'll write your teacher a note so she knows what happened." Then keep the note short and factual: "Jordan worked about 25 minutes, finished 1 through 4, got stuck on the regrouping in 5 through 8. We reread the directions and the example, still confusing. Could you review it with him?" Time spent, what was tried, where it broke. Teachers love that note. It's a map to the pothole.

Once in a while, this is just a rough Tuesday. Several nights a week, it's a pattern worth a bigger conversation: how long should homework take, and what is the teacher seeing in class? Mention the shape of the pattern too. "Knows it at school, freezes at home" and "can compute but can't read the word problems" point to completely different fixes.

Either way, protect the relationship first. The concept will still be there tomorrow, for a rested brain and a teacher who knows where it went wrong. Tonight your kid mostly needs dinner, a bath, and ten minutes of being a person who is more than a math sheet.
