The backpack hits the floor, the math worksheet comes out, and your child does 43 minus 18 in about twelve seconds. Then they see "Lena had 43 shells…" and suddenly the pencil is a tiny weapon of doom. Same numbers. Totally different child.
\nYour kid can do the math (that's not the problem)
\nThis is the part that makes parents twitchy. Your child can subtract. You have seen it. They just finished a whole row of naked number problems with no drama, maybe a little erasing.
\nThen the worksheet says: "Lena had 43 shells. She gave 18 shells to her cousin. How many shells does Lena have now?" And your child says, "I don't get it."
\nNot "I can't subtract." They may not even get far enough to realize subtraction is the math they need. The hard part is getting from the tiny story to the equation.
\nA naked number problem tells your child exactly what to do. A word problem makes them decide what matters, what changed, and what is being asked. That is a much heavier job. The math did not disappear. It got hidden inside reading.
\nA word problem is reading comprehension wearing a math costume
\nBefore your child can compute, they have to read like a detective. Who are the people? Who has what? What changed? What is the question? That is reading comprehension, full stop.
\nTake this one: "Ravi had 26 baseball cards. His aunt gave him some more. Now he has 41. How many cards did his aunt give him?" A child has to hold the whole situation in their head: started with 26, something was added, ended at 41, the missing piece is the aunt's part. That is a lot of language packed into three sentences.
\nVocabulary trips kids too. Words like left, fewer, difference, altogether, each all carry math meaning. "Difference" at home means what separates a frog from a toad. In math class it usually means subtract.
\nSentence structure matters as well. "Sam has 7 more crayons than Tia" and "Tia has 7 fewer crayons than Sam" describe the same thing, and plenty of adults slow down there for a second. So when your child says "I don't know what to do," they often mean "I don't know what this sentence is telling me."
\nWhy the keyword trick backfires
\nA lot of us learned the keyword trick: "in all" means add, "left" means subtract, "each" means multiply. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it walks your child straight into a wall.
\nThe classic troublemaker is "more." Kids are told more means add. Then they get: "Mia has 14 stickers. She has 5 more stickers than Jay. How many stickers does Jay have?" The word "more" sits there waving its little flag, but the answer is not 14 + 5. Jay has fewer than Mia, so it is 14 minus 5. The problem says Mia has more. It asks about Jay.
\nSame with "left." Usually it means subtract, but "On the left side of the shelf there are 8 books, on the right side 6" is an addition problem with the word "left" in it.
\nKeywords train kids to hunt for one magic word instead of understanding the situation. A better habit is asking "What is happening?" before "What operation do I use?" If the homework itself uses methods or vocabulary you have never seen, the new-math homework translator decodes the most common ones.
\nRead it like a story, not a puzzle
\nWhen a word problem is hard, slow the whole thing down. Just long enough for your child's brain to stop grabbing random numbers like loose candy.
\nA simple routine helps:

- Read the problem once all the way through.\n
- Read it again, slower.\n
- Retell it without the numbers.\n
- Ask: "What is the question asking us to find?"\n
\nThat third step is the strange little magic. "Jordan had some toy cars. He put some in a box and left the rest on the rug." No numbers, just the story. Now ask: did the number on the rug get bigger or smaller? Smaller. Good. That sounds like subtraction. Now uncover the numbers.
\nIf your child jumps straight to adding whatever two numbers they see, gently stop the pencil. "Tell me the story first." Not in a gotcha voice. More like, "Let's see what this little story is doing." Staying in that coaching role without grabbing the pencil yourself is a skill of its own; there are more ways to help with math homework without doing the math.
\nDraw it, act it out, grab the cereal
\nSome kids cannot hold the whole story in their head yet. That is not laziness. Working memory gets crowded fast, especially after a long school day and one granola bar too many. So get the problem out of the head and onto the table.
\nDraw it. Badly is fine. Actually, badly is perfect. For the shells problem, draw 43 as a long bar and cross off a chunk for 18. For a comparison problem, draw two bars, one longer. Teachers call these bar models or tape diagrams. Parents call them "those rectangle things." Both count.
\nFor the sticker problem, draw Mia's bar as 14, then Jay's bar underneath, a little shorter, with the extra piece labeled 5. Suddenly the problem stops shouting "more means add" and starts showing that Jay is the smaller amount.
\nYou can also act it out with whatever is nearby: cereal pieces, socks from the laundry pile, pennies from the junk drawer, that one dinosaur missing a leg. If the problem says someone gave away 6 crackers, physically move 6 crackers away. If 4 kids share 20 grapes, make 4 little piles.
\nThis can feel babyish to older kids, so keep it casual. "Let's just make the problem less annoying" lands better than "We are going to use manipulatives." Nobody wants to be manipulated by manipulatives at 7:45 p.m.
\nWhen the reading itself is the wall
\nSometimes the problem is hard because your child cannot decode the words smoothly enough to think about the math. If all their energy goes into sounding out baseball, altogether, and aquarium, there is nothing left for the actual problem.
\nIn that case, you reading the problem aloud is completely fair. Really. If the assignment is meant to practice math, reading it aloud lets your child show the math thinking without getting blocked by decoding. Teachers do this in small groups all the time.
\nIt is also a useful little experiment. If your child can solve the problem after hearing it but not after reading it alone, that tells you something: the math is probably fine, and the reading load is the issue. You might tell the teacher exactly that: "When I read the word problems aloud, they can solve them. When they read alone, they get stuck before the math." That is specific and helpful, no labels, no panic.
\nIf the reading struggles show up in other places too, like library books and written directions, it is worth knowing when reading trouble deserves a closer look. At home, keep the goal clean: if tonight is math practice, you can be the reader. Let your child be the thinker.
