Fourteen pages, two Mokifun games, and one secret word to uncover: this free Winter Activity Book for 2nd grade mixes reading, addition, and logic into a packet that keeps 7- and 8-year-olds busy for a good long while. It starts with a page of Winter Fun Facts, and the puzzles that follow reuse that vocabulary so the reading actually matters.

On the language side there is a Word Search whose leftover letters spell a secret word, a Word Scramble of winter words, and a Code Breaker where each symbol stands for a letter. Math comes in through Secret Message (solve the problems, then use the answers to crack a code) and a Math Pyramid where each box is the sum of the two boxes below it. A Patterns page has kids find the rule and fill in the empty boxes.

For a change of pace there is a Winter Maze, a Mandala to color, and Dots and Boxes — the classic pencil-and-paper game for two, with the rules printed right on the page.

Three Activity pages connect to Mokifun. Kids play Word Race and note how fast they found the words, and twice in the book they play Math Monkey and record how many problems they got right. Two Math Monkey score boxes make it easy to see improvement from the start of the packet to the end.

Skills covered: reading for information, winter vocabulary and spelling, addition fluency, decoding, pattern recognition, and taking turns in a two-player game. It works as a last-week-before-winter-break packet, an indoor-recess bin, a homeschool winter unit, or a set of snow-day pages at home.

Print on US Letter in black and white. The mandala and maze are designed to be colored afterward, so no color ink is needed. Print one copy per child so the Word Search and Secret Message are fresh for everyone.
