This is the biggest step up in our fall series: 14 pages that mix reading puzzles with real addition practice, plus a couple of two-player games for when a sibling or classmate wants to join in. It is aimed squarely at 7- and 8-year-olds who can read short paragraphs and add within 100.

Like the other books for older kids, it begins with Fall Fun Facts. Read those carefully, because the Word Search (with a secret word hidden in the leftover letters), the Word Scramble, and the Code Breaker all pull their answers from that page. The Fall Maze gives a breather in between.

The math pages are where 2nd graders get a workout. In Secret Message, kids solve addition and subtraction problems and each answer unlocks a letter. The Math Pyramid asks them to fill in boxes where each one is the sum of the two below it — a favorite for building mental-math fluency. A Patterns page has them find the rule and complete the sequence. Dots and Boxes is a classic pencil game for two with the rules printed right on the page, and a fall Mandala gives everyone a calm coloring break.

The book has three online tie-in pages. One sends kids to play Word Race on Mokifun to see how fast they can find the words; the other two say "Go to mokifun.com and play: Math Monkey," so they can play Math Monkey and record how many problems they got right. Teachers can use these as a reward station once the paper pages are done.

Skills covered: reading for detail, spelling, decoding, addition and subtraction fact fluency, logical reasoning, and turn-taking. That range makes the book useful as a week of morning work in the classroom, a fall-break packet, or something to keep kids busy during a long Thanksgiving car ride.

Printing is simple: US Letter, black and white, one copy per child, stapled in the corner. No answer sheet needed — everything can be checked against the Fun Facts page.
