A 9×9 Sudoku, a Math Snake, and a Secret Message: this free 14-page Christmas Activity Book gives 8- and 9-year-olds puzzles with real substance for the weeks around the holidays. Everything prints on regular paper and is meant to be done independently.

The book is anchored by a page of Christmas Fun Facts. The Word Scramble draws its words from it, the Matching page asks kids to match each Christmas word to its meaning, and the Word Search hides the same vocabulary — with the leftover letters spelling a secret word.

Math comes three ways. Secret Message has students solve problems and use the answers to crack a code. Math Snake is a winding chain of problems; solve every link and color the snake. The Math Pyramid has each box equal to the sum of the two below it, with blanks to fill in. For logic there is the full 9×9 Sudoku (every digit from 1 to 9 once in each row, column, and box), plus Tic-Tac-Toe for two players with space to track who wins the most games. A Christmas Mandala is there for coloring.

Two Activity pages tie in Mokifun. Kids play Math Monkey and record how many problems they got right, then later play Word Race and note how fast they found the words. The score boxes make an easy class challenge before break.

Skills covered: reading comprehension, vocabulary and word meanings, spelling, addition and multiplication fluency, logical deduction, and sticking with a longer puzzle. It works as a December morning-work packet, a sub-folder staple, a classroom Christmas party station, or a homeschool unit on holiday traditions.

Print on US Letter in black and white. The snake and mandala are designed to be colored, so no color ink is needed. Print one copy per child so each Sudoku is a fresh challenge.
